Falmouth Divers Ltd

A pioneering business providing a service to the inshore and offshore industries.

Falmouth Divers is one of Cornwall’s true pioneering businesses. Their involvement in the construction of the very first offshore wind farms in the world is testament to this. With 30 years of international experience and wide range of expertise, the Falmouth based company are an invaluable part of the offshore renewable energy supply chain.

The company was founded in the late 70’s to provide diving and submarine cable services to the inshore and offshore industries. They have had many high profile clients such as E.ON and Shell, for which they are approved contractors. They have completed projects in some 67 countries around the world, from Europe to South America, Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

The extent of their experience is evident in the scale and number of offshore projects they have completed around the world. These include diving and cable support for the first ever offshore wind turbines in Blyth, the first full scale offshore wind farm in Denmark (80 turbines) and first full scale offshore wind farm in the UK at North Hoyle (30 turbines). They have completed around 240 projects in submarine cable industry alone.

Steve Roue, Operations Director, attributes a proportion of their success on their location. “Being in Cornwall means we have the unique advantage of being surrounded by the sea. We are experts in understanding tides, wind and waves and then predicting their effects,” he said.

Falmouth Divers have been able to recruit many highly experienced divers and engineers with the relevant skills from Cornwall. Steve added that “The skills in offshore working are excellent in Cornwall and we are able to recruit international expertise.”

There is an established cluster of successful offshore companies based in Cornwall where Falmouth Divers are based. The company has had the benefit of collaborative working on a number of projects with other Cornish companies such as Seacore and Mojo Maritime providing a much stronger offer to clients needing their expertise offshore.

Steve believes that the offshore renewable energy market has great potential for Cornish companies because the expertise are available to support the supply chain and the resources off the shores of our coastline. “There are great opportunities on the horizon. I can see us working further offshore and in more challenging conditions. This will call for innovations in vessel design, the supply of specialist plant such as cable burial machines and skill based training together with all the necessary commercial services such as legal, finance and marketing. These innovations can easily happen in Cornwall. With our maritime and offshore history we have great skills to support this.”
